The Piagnaro Castle overlooks the inhabited center of Pontremoli. Its location is not accidental but strategic and forward-thinking, situated at the point where the road to Monte Bardone ascended towards the Cisa Pass. From its walls, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire town and the confluence of the two watercourses that flow peacefully below: the Verde stream and the Magra River. Its grand and unique name derives from “piagne,” slabs of gray-colored sandstone extracted from local quarries, which have always covered and still adorn the castle’s roof. The first document mentioning its name, “Planele,” dates back to 1262.

The architectural layout of the Piagnaro Castle is the result of multiple construction phases carried out in different eras. It features Gothic windows dating back to the 14th century in the Governor’s headquarters, a keep (mastio) believed to be from around 1435 and rebuilt by Niccolò Piccinino, the central body which served as a barracks until the mid-19th century, and the 18th-century ramparts. The castle underwent significant deterioration, but its restoration began when a decision was made to allocate part of it for the creation of the Lunigiana Stele Statue Museum.

Wedding

The Castello del Piagnaro is a venue for wedding receptions and private parties, made unique by the spectacular view that can be admired from its walls. It is an ideal location for an unforgettable wedding, made special by the beauty of the castle’s walls, the enchantment of its spacious areas, and the charm that a union within the walls of a castle like Piagnaro can create. It is possible to have only a civil ceremony.

Meeting

The conference rooms in the Castello del Piagnaro are located in the northern part of the fortress. Ideal for meetings, conferences, study sessions, work meetings, parties, ceremonies, gala dinners, and weddings, they are arranged in a simple and suggestive manner, allowing for various types of events to take place. The conference rooms have a surface area of 75 square meters and can accommodate approximately one hundred people. There is a spacious and fully equipped professional kitchen available, which can be used for catering services. Equipment and services: Kitchen utensils are not available on-site.
