The Piagnaro Castle is an impressive structure that stands on the hill of Pontremoli, in the province of Massa-Carrara, in the Italian region of Tuscany. Its history dates back to the medieval past of the region.

The exact date of the castle’s construction is not known, but it is believed that the first fortifications were built around the 11th century. Initially, the castle was owned by the Malaspina family, a powerful feudal dynasty that ruled over much of Lunigiana, a historical region that extends between Tuscany and Liguria.

Over the centuries, the Piagnaro Castle underwent various modifications and expansions. During the medieval period, it was subject to disputes and conflicts between different noble families, including the Visconti of Milan and the Fieschi of Genoa. Over time, the castle assumed a strategic role in the defense of the surrounding territory.

In the 15th century, the castle came under the control of the Rossi family, who transformed it into a noble residence. Significant renovations and additions were made, including the inner courtyard and the lookout tower. However, over the subsequent centuries, the castle gradually lost its military significance and became a private property.

Throughout the years, the Piagnaro Castle experienced periods of abandonment and deterioration. However, in the 1970s, it underwent a restoration project that restored its former splendor. In 1975, the castle became the home of the Museum of Stele Statues, thanks to the initiative of Professor Augusto Cesare Ambrosi.

Today, the Piagnaro Castle stands as one of the main tourist attractions of Pontremoli. In addition to the Museum of Stele Statues, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the surrounding valley.
